Artists Statement
In my work the most exciting revelations come from the jumbling of traditional craft techniques and a hand made aesthetic with idiosyncratic design and stylized machined pieces. In my work I strive to create a whimsical and off-beat perspective of everyday situations and what we see around us.
I work in two contrasting media which allows me to explore a range of textures. In wool I create 3 dimensional and relief sculptures using a variety of felting techniques and hand and machine embroidery. These sculptures are models of individual subversive characters based on the eccentricities of people around me. Each has a story, displayed on a felted panel that reflects some aspects of all of our own, sometimes bleak existence. In acrylic sheet I create cut shapes and tessellations taken from the natural environment. These glossy forms become a contrasting backdrop for the woolen creatures.
